Local community champion and long-time volunteer Dave Thompson is embarking on one of Europe’s most demanding endurance challenges - the Ultra Tour de Monte Rosa - to raise vital funds for the Denis Law Legacy Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting young people through free-to-access sports and creative activities.
Dave is no stranger to pushing limits. Having previously raised funds for Streetsport by completing the 61-mile Paddy Buckley Round and 50-mile Assynt Traverse, he now sets his sights on the Ultra Tour de Monte Rosa, a 170km ultra-marathon with over 11,000m of elevation gain, traversing rugged alpine terrain across Switzerland and Italy.
“I’ve seen first-hand the impact the Denis Law Legacy Trust has on young people in Aberdeen,” said Dave. “Through the Streetsport programme, we’re helping kids find purpose, build confidence, and stay active. Taking on this challenge is my way of giving back and ensuring these programmes continue to thrive.”
“For me the challenge is also in memory of the great Denis Law who sadly passed away earlier this year, patron of the charity and a Manchester United and Scotland footballing legend, his legacy truly lives on.”
Dave has been a dedicated volunteer with the Streetsport initiative since 2018, helping deliver free weekly sessions in areas of high youth annoyance. His goal is to raise £2,000 to support the charity’s mission of reducing youth crime and promoting positive destinations for young people. Dave, who works for RMI is also grateful for their active support in communities across the world and their £500 contribution to the charity.
The Ultra Tour de Monte Rosa is not just a physical test—it’s a mental and emotional journey. With unpredictable weather, technical trails, and high altitudes, it’s a fitting metaphor for the resilience and determination Dave brings to his community work.
