Counter terrorism police have taken over the investigation into the death of politician Ann Widdecombe.

Law enforcement had initially claimed the alleged murder was non-terror-related, and that there was no evidence to suggest a political motive.

However, on Monday, "new information and evidence" came to light which changed the course of the investigation and counter terror officers subsequently took over the case.

A 28-year-old man from Rotherham who had been arrested on suspicion of murder over the weekend has now been re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

It comes after the former Conservative minister and latterly Reform spokeswoman, 78, was found dead at her home in Devon on Thursday having sustained serious injuries.

Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, said: "We are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack."

Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) described the investigation as "dynamic and complex".

The development came after The Sun published CCTV footage of the alleged suspect carrying what it described as a "wooded stick" in the hours before Widdecombe's death.
