Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell used more than £400,000 embezzled from party funds to purchase luxury goods, vehicles and household items over a 12-year period, the High Court in Edinburgh has heard.

Prosecutors said Murrell made hundreds of purchases using SNP charge cards, including a £124,550 motorhome, a Jaguar iPace worth £81,277, luxury watches, jewellery and household furnishings.

Many items were delivered to the Uddingston home he shared with former first minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The court heard Murrell made 383 Amazon purchases worth more than £42,000, alongside a further 238 purchases from other retailers totalling almost £140,000.

Investigators recovered a range of items from his home, including a £3,000 robotic lawnmower that had been recorded in SNP accounts as “legal fees”, and a £3,500 silver wine coaster.

Prosecutors said Murrell created false invoices and altered accounting records to conceal the spending. The motorhome was allegedly disguised as a party vehicle, while the Jaguar purchase was recorded as a “stage payment” linked to SNP events.

The motorhome was found parked at his mother's property, having travelled just four miles in more than two years.

Officers discovered it contained luxury kitchenware and toiletries, with no evidence it had ever been used for party campaigning.

Murrell is due to be sentenced on June 23.
