The Remiges V team is now gearing up for their biggest challenge yet – The World’s Toughest Row 2026.
This gruelling race will see them row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, pushing through extreme conditions in one of the world’s most formidable endurance events. But the real drive behind their journey lies in raising awareness and vital funds for three exceptional charities: MND Scotland, Mind Body & Sole, and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
As part of his personal preparation and commitment to this extraordinary cause, Karl Bainbridge, a dedicated member of the Remiges V challenge, has recently completed one of the UK’s most iconic endurance events – The Wall 70 Mile Ultramarathon. Finishing in an impressive 14 hours and 46 minutes, Karl demonstrated the physical endurance and mental strength that will be crucial for next year’s transatlantic row.
Held on 14 June 2025, The Wall is a continuous 70-mile ultramarathon from Carlisle to Gateshead, organised by Rat Race Adventure Sports. The race follows the historic path of Hadrian’s Wall, challenging participants with 1055m of elevation gain as they traverse dramatic countryside, ancient Roman landscapes, and remote trails on a fully supported and waymarked route.
Promoted as an ideal first step into the world beyond traditional marathon distances, The Wall is designed to be completed at a manageable pace of 3mph, with an average completion rate of over 90%. Karl’s sub-15-hour result firmly places him among the standout performers of the event.
His participation forms part of the wider Remiges V challenge – a transformative veterans' endeavour that empowers its members through purpose-driven endurance events. Karl’s achievement is a testament not only to his personal resilience but to the ethos of Remiges V: building strength, discipline, and community in support of causes that truly matter.
Speaking after the event, Karl said: "It was tough but incredibly rewarding. Knowing I was running not just for myself, but as part of Remiges V, kept me going through the toughest sections. Crossing the finish line felt like more than just a personal achievement – it was a statement of what we can all push through and overcome."
Karl’s ultramarathon success reflects the commitment, camaraderie, and determination at the heart of the Remiges V challenge — all of which will be vital as the team prepares to face the vast and unforgiving Atlantic Ocean in 2026.
