In the heart of the North-east, where resilience and innovation are part of the region’s DNA, Remiges V is making waves with a bold and heartfelt mission.

This five-man rowing team Will Mackie, Brian Smith, Stuart Ward, Stuart Brown and Karl Bainbridge - isn’t just preparing to cross the Atlantic – they’re committed to raising awareness, funds, and hope for causes that deeply matter.

Remiges V team is gearing up for the 2026 The World’s Toughest Row, rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean – one of the toughest endurance races in the world. But the real drive behind their journey is to support three incredible charities: MND Scotland, Mind Body & Sole and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.

For the crew, this is more than a physical feat – it’s deeply personal. One team member shared:

"For the Remiges V crew, this isn’t just an endurance challenge – it’s a shared mission grounded in purpose and personal connection. As a team with a background in the armed forces and a collective commitment to mental health advocacy, they are rowing for far more than the finish line."

The crew has long followed the World’s Toughest Row, inspired by past military teams like HMS Oardacious, whose achievements – including an all-female crew in 2024 – demonstrated what can be accomplished through unity and determination. That inspiration, combined with a desire to push their own mental and physical limits, was the spark that launched their campaign.

Together, the team brings a mix of lived experience – from Royal Navy service to mental health first aid training – and a passion for making an impact. Supporting the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, MND Scotland, and the Mind, Body & Sole reflects not only their personal ties but a deep respect for the challenges faced by others.

With personal connections to individuals living with Motor Neurone Disease, and a strong desire to tackle stigma around mental health and isolation, the team is united in their belief that this journey is about much more than crossing an ocean – it's about raising voices, building awareness, and fostering real change.

The name RemigesV – Latin for “The Five Oarsmen” or “wing feathers” – reflects strength through unity. Every oar stroke the team takes is in support of those who feel forgotten, isolated, or face uncertain futures. With each mile rowed, they aim to raise not just money, but awareness and visibility for the vital work of these charities.

Beyond the challenge itself, the crew are actively engaging with the community – hosting events and building partnerships with local businesses. Their goal is to spark meaningful conversations around mental health, veteran support, and medical research, while creating a legacy that goes far beyond the finish line.

Remiges V is inviting individuals and organisations across the North-east to get involved – whether through sponsorship, donations, fundraising events, or simply helping spread the word.
