Local artist and designer Jamie Cameron has developed a new service to bring creative design to local businesses

Local artist and designer Jamie Cameron who was tasked with creating this year’s Northern Star Business Awards, enjoyed the process so much that he has developed a new service to bring creative design to local businesses. Recognising the need for a realistic and flexible graphic service specialising in 3D, it was a logical step to expand the artistic service which he runs as Aberdeen Art, into a more commercial sphere:

“It was really the whole involvement with some excellent people during the Northern Star Awards that I realised I was missing a great opportunity. There is a rich diversity of businesses in Aberdeen especially within the oil and gas sector, and speaking to people at the Chamber of Commerce, I felt that I should be putting myself out there much more to try and work with businesses who want to showcasing their ideas in a new and exciting way.”

While Aberdeen Art focusses on traditional hand drawings, cityscape sculptures and rusted stag’s heads, the new service, ‘Jamie Cameron: 3D Graphics Artist’ will be much more business-oriented, and specialise in providing 3D images and animations to help show products in operation, explain complex systems, show architectural interiors, and provide stunning realistic visuals where other media simply wouldn’t get the message across. With over 8 years experience in Computer Graphics, Jamie explains:

“The capabilities of 3D Computer Graphics are about as wide ranging as any- probably the best thing is the flexibility- literally every characteristic of the model can be adjusted. So, say if you were designing a house and wanted to see how it could look- you can actually show the exact same tile that you have selected for the kitchen floor, or the wallpaper or the door trims, and show it exactly like real life. And if you changed your mind and wanted to see a different option- it's very quick, very easy. When you compare this with any alternative, such as photography or a traditional studio setup, there is so much more time, work and money involved in hiring a photographer, compositing the scene, processing the images, making changes, re-touching etc: with CG, the changes can be done in hours not days, and the savings in time and money are passed on to the client. Over and above that, there are special effects and things you can show in 3D which you physically couldn’t do any other way. For example, if you are developing a product and want to show it in operation before you have a prototype, it can really wow people and get them talking.”

The ways this can be done are very wide ranging, and for whatever you are trying to convey there is always a best way to convey the information:

“Just some of the things you can do with 3D graphics can include: still images with realistic perspective and field of view, animated turnarounds, walk through animations where the camera actually takes you through the space, videos which show the assembly and disassembly of something and how it operates, products being used, and even 2d-to-3d videos showing the plans coming to life- going back to my work in art, understanding the client’s aim has always driven my approach, and even more so now- after all, it’s a tool to help achieve something, and knowing how to utilise properly it is where the real skill is.”

Getting involved in some of the Chamber events has also been incredibly useful:

“The Chamber of Commerce along with the Enterprise Hub have really helped me take this initial idea to make my skills more commercial, and distill it down to a real service which can provide value to people in and around Aberdeen. Over the past month I’ve spoken to engineers, oil and gas executives, sales people, architects, joiners and a kitchen installer about how we can work together, and if you would like to know more about 3D Graphics or think it could help you showcase your ideas, I would love to hear from you.”
