Local fundraiser Marius Coste has officially completed the first three months of his Miles of Smiles Costume Comeback Challenge, a unique campaign combining running, costumes, and community engagement to raise awareness and funds for SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) and Clan Cancer Support.
Since June, he has covered an impressive 900km in just 12 weeks, raising over £1,170. Alongside the miles, he has also endured 86 cold showers and 19 ice bath immersions — all in the name of highlighting resilience, wellbeing, and hope.
August marked a month of milestones and “firsts” for the challenge. Highlights included:
- A rainbow unicorn debut in Dundee
- A raffle launch with a signed Tyson Fury prize
- Appearing as the world’s tallest Stitch at Celebrate Aberdeen — even making STV News coverage
- The launch of the “Waving for Wellbeing” initiative at Albyn School
- And, in true Aberdeen fashion, transforming into a seagull costume, kindly donated by Diamonté Productions
The campaign’s reach has been remarkable. In August alone, Miles of Smiles posts achieved almost 19,000 views on Instagram, 29,000 impressions, and connected with nearly 6,000 people on LinkedIn.
Reflecting on the journey so far, Marius expressed gratitude for the laughter, encouragement, and generosity that fuel the challenge.
He said: “The support has been incredible — it shows how small acts can create a big impact. Every smile, cheer and donation helps keep the message alive.”
The Miles of Smiles Costume Comeback Challenge will continue through to December 2026, with weekly 50km efforts in costume across Aberdeen, Montrose, Dundee, Glasgow and beyond.
