More than 1,200 museum artefacts and artworks are still missing from Aberdeen City Council's collection - nearly four years into an investigation into their whereabouts.
In 2021 it was discovered that the council's Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums (AAGM) could not locate over 1,300 items worth close to £200,000.
A probe was launched with the council "optimistic" many of the items would be found and blaming a recording error during art gallery refurbishments.
But almost four years on, the BBC reports only 126 items have been located, with over 684 including a Neolithic stone axe and hundreds of antiques still unaccounted for.
Around 120 of the items have now also been classified as stolen.
Councillor Martin Grieg, the council's culture spokesperson, told the BBC: "There are occasions where artefacts are stored and not properly indexed.
"We have put in place a very robust system of making sure we have up to date reports and records of all the items in the collection.
"There will be a proportion that have been stolen, a proportion will have been misfiled, in the wrong place or mis-labelled, so there is work underway to find out exactly what we have and where."
