North East Scotland College’s newly refurbished Planetarium is opening its doors to the public later this month.
Following two sold-out screenings at the Aberdeen Science Festival, the College will host a series of immersive fulldome cinema shows from 22 to 24 October.
The iconic facility, now almost 50 years old, was recently transformed through a significant investment in the latest digital technology.
Three 25-minute films will be available, each designed to transport audiences across Earth and space.
Scott Matthew, Assistant Principal - IT and Digital Services, NESCol, said: “It's an exciting milestone to be able to welcome the public back to our Planetarium once again.
“The facility is among the few permanent planetarium theatres in Scotland and offers a unique experience in the heart of Aberdeen.
“Investment in the Planetarium has given it a new lease of life, and we hope the local community will enjoy the fun and immersive experience it can now offer.”
The Planetarium first opened in 1977, when NESCol’s City Campus was still part of Aberdeen College. Kitted out with a multi-lens analogue projector, the facility was a valuable resource for maritime courses – until seafaring technology advanced.
Earlier this year, NESCol retired the equipment and replaced it with a fulldome digital projector. Combined with a domed ceiling, reclined seating and sound system, the Planetarium now offers audiences an exciting, 360-degree visual experience.
The Planetarium’s public shows are open to all, with tickets costing £5. The College can also host schools and community groups for private screenings.
