Proposals have been revealed by Network Rail that would see Aberdeen's Platform 8 reinstated to boost journey times between the North-east and the central belt.
Some major changes for the line, that hasn't been used in decades, would be required, though the line could be used for slower-moving freight trains in order to speed-up passenger services on other lines.
Plans suggest work getting underway in March 2025, taking a year for completion.
The works, part of the 'Aberdeen to Central Belt Enhancement Scheme', follow an £8million revamp of the station.
"Simple reconfiguration of passenger flow" would be required, according to Network Rail, but no "physical alterations" would be needed.
Documents also read: "This contributes to encouraging passengers and freight users onto the railway, driving modal shift, supporting the decarbonising of Scotland’s transport sector."
