North-east charity seeks volunteers with burning desire to help

A charity which supports adults with learning disabilities and additional support needs in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus is hoping that adventurous fundraisers will “hot foot it” to its next adventure.

Aberdeen-headquartered Inspire recently kicked off a year of celebrations to mark its 30th anniversary, and the eighth annual firewalk in Aberdeen on November 5, will be the next milestone in a busy calendar of events. It was hoped that the anniversary would be marked by 30 volunteers signing up to walk on hot coals in aid of the worthy cause, but that target has already been smashed with the number signed up creeping towards 40.

Inspire started life as Partnership Housing in 1988 then became Partnership before adopting its current name in 2006. Service provision began in 1990 when three people moved from Aberdeen’s Woodlands Hospital into their new home in the city’s Fonthill Terrace – nowadays more than 300 adults are supported thanks to a range of initiatives in Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus.

Most recently, Inspire has significantly increased its presence in Aberdeen City by becoming the provider for established services at Manor Walk and Donald Dewar Court, and has expanded outwith its traditional area to support individuals in Angus for the first time.

Commenting on plans for the firewalk, Inspire chief executive Linda Gray said: “The forthcoming firewalk is one of the many ways we will celebrate our landmark 30th anniversary and we are hugely grateful to everyone who has signed up so far. However, there is still space for others to join them and we hope that more volunteers will rise to the challenge to help us raise vital funds.”

The 2019 Inspire Firewalk will take place at 6:30pm on November 5, immediately before the City of Aberdeen fireworks display at the Queens Links. Entry costs £20 and, whilst there is no required minimum sponsorship amount, it is hoped that all participants will raise something towards the charity’s work. Volunteers to assist with a bucket collection on the night are also sought. To find out more, visit click here.
