Aberdeen-based HR consultancy Nuvo HR has opened applications for the next intake of its L3 Life Long Leadership Programme, a six-month development programme for people managers in SMEs.

The programme is designed for individuals who are new to leadership roles or managing teams as part of their wider responsibilities. It focuses on areas including communication, self-awareness and managing different working styles within teams.

According to Nuvo HR Director Alison Paton, the programme was developed to support managers as their roles evolve. “Many people step into leadership positions without formal training,” she said. “L3 is designed to provide practical support that can be applied in day-to-day management.”

Evolving management approaches

Many organisations are reviewing management and leadership practices as expectations around flexibility, wellbeing and performance continue to change.

According to HR professionals, this has created challenges for people managers, particularly in SMEs. While expectations have shifted, leadership approaches have not always kept pace, with many managers continuing to lead in the way they were previously managed.

“Leaders are being asked to do things differently, but not everyone has been given the tools or space to adapt,” said Paton. “Flexibility, regular feedback and self-awareness are increasingly part of what employees expect from managers.”

Nuvo HR’s L3 programme was developed in response to these challenges and is aimed at people managers who are either new to leadership or looking to adjust their approach.

The programme focuses on developing self-awareness, communication skills and the ability to lead different personality types. Participants use tools such as the Insights Diagnostic to better understand their own working preferences and those of their teams.

Seren Trewavas, Chartered Organisational Psychologist and co-creator of the programme, said the emphasis is on practical application. “We see a real need for leaders to understand how their behaviour impacts others. Small changes in communication can make a significant difference to team performance and resilience.”

Delivery is split across virtual group sessions, one-to-one support and online learning, allowing participants to fit development around existing workloads. Group sizes are kept small to support discussion and individual development.
