Reform UK has pledged to keep the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) - despite hinting if it was needed last month.

The party is reportedly set to announce that it will retain the OBR if it wins the next general election.

It comes after leader Nigel Farage told The Telegraph in January that he had "questioned the need" for the OBR, suggesting it "effectively dictates to elected politicians what they should or should not do".

But Reform's "shadow chancellor" Robert Jenrick will today publicly back the OBR - as well as the Bank of England - arguing that the bodies' independence helps to encourage greater fiscal discipline.

The Times reports Jenrick will still criticise the Bank of England for "taking its eye off the ball on inflation", but will put forward more subtle changes to the the bank's and the OBR's remits rather than scrapping them.

He will suggest the Bank of England could be stripped of responsibilities such as net zero, while the OBR could be opened to greater “outside, proven forecasting expertise”.
