This year will be 30 years since the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster, which had a profound impact on regulatory approaches to Health and Safety in the UK and, subsequently, globally. Many jurisdictions have viewed the UK’s framework as a model which evolved successfully from rigid prescription, to goal setting regulations, mainly due to the Piper Alpha Inquiry. Since 1988, the UK and the international oil and gas industry has undergone a major operational shift, with the regulatory framework constantly updated to deal effectively with the safety aspects of the offshore oil and gas sector as it has changed in terms of technology and geography. Current focus is aimed at replacing ageing infrastructure with new and innovative technology which inevitably requires adaptation to modern regulatory approaches; it is felt that now an appropriate time to reflect on, and critically analyse, the status and future outlook of energy regulation.

Our Conference themes are Energy Regulation, Transition and Innovation.
