Scots are this morning heading to the polls for the 2026 Holyrood election, while union bosses have turned on Sir Keir Starmer ahead of an expected local election "bloodbath".

Polling stations across the country opened at 7am this morning and will remain open until 10pm tonight as Scots prepare to elect a new Scottish Parliament.

Voters will elect 129 MSPs, of which 73 will represent local areas known as constituencies with the rest representing larger regions, together covering the whole of Scotland.

There will be no overnight counting once the polls close, meaning the first results are not expected until Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph reports union bosses have rounded on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer ahead of what the newspaper predicts will be a "local election bloodbath".

A General Secretary of a Labour-affiliated union told The Telegraph the PM "needs to go", with another saying the government is "not good enough".

A video call has been arranged for 5pm on Friday in which union bosses will discuss the local election results in England as well as Scotland and Wales.

Labour is expected to lose hundreds of council seats across England, including in traditional strongholds such as London.
