Staff at STV are set to walk out next month in a day of industrial action timed to coincide with the Scottish Parliament election results.

Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and of broadcasting union Bectu, which represents technical staff, will walk out on Friday May 8.

The move, the BBC reports, is in relation to pay freezes and not directly linked to planned programme cuts including the controversial proposals around the STV North news show.

Last month, regulator Ofcom announced it was delaying its decision on whether or not to allow STV to scrap its dedicated north news programme until after the Holyrood election.

The date of the latest planned strike action has been chosen to coincide with the election vote count and could result in the channel's coverage being disrupted.

Nick McGowan-Lowe, the NUJ's Scotland organiser, said workers were "overworked and underpaid", adding: "Journalists at STV have no faith in the current management at STV , nor their current strategy, but tabling a fair pay offer would be the best first step to regaining their trust."

Paul McManus, Bectu's negotiation officer for Scotland, said that STV staff had been left with no choice but to strike, but that the company still had time to reach a deal to avoid the walkout.

An STV spokesperson said: "We recognise a temporary salary freeze is challenging for colleagues, but we've had to take a range of measures to respond to the market conditions facing the media sector.

"Returning the business to a strong financial footing is our priority and will protect the long-term interests of our colleagues.

"We are disappointed that the planned day of action will impact our audiences and we remain committed to continuing the dialogue with the joint unions."
