Voters in Aberdeen South and Arbroath and Broughty Ferry are heading to the polls today to elect new Westminster representatives following the resignations of two MPs.

The contest was triggered by the resignation of SNP MPs Stephen Flynn and Stephen Gethins following their election to the Scottish Parliament last month.

Flynn, who won Aberdeen South at the 2024 General Election, stepped down to take up his seat at Holyrood. Gethins also vacated his Arbroath and Broughty Ferry seat after securing election to the Scottish Parliament.

Both constituencies are expected to be closely watched, with opposition parties hoping to overturn SNP majorities.

Flynn secured a majority of nearly 4,000 votes in Aberdeen South while Gethins held Arbroath and Broughty Ferry by around 900 votes.

The polls open the same day as the Makerfield by-election in Greater Manchester where Andy Burnham is expected to launch a leadership challenge to Sir Keir Starmer if he wins.
