Aberdeen FC Community Trust (AFCCT) has launched a new challenge aimed at encouraging people across the region to get active while raising vital funds for local charities.
The ‘Big Red 50 Day 5k Challenge’, led by AFCCT, opens for sign-ups on Wednesday, March 11 and aims to motivate people to improve their physical and mental wellbeing by completing 5k of physical activity each day for 50 days. The challenge can be completed in a variety of ways including walking, running, cycling, swimming or any other form of exercise that keeps participants active.
AFCCT will officially kick-off the ‘Big Red 50 Day 5k Challenge’ on May 11 - Gothenburg Day - with participants encouraged to raise funds not only for the Trust, but for a range of other charities across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, while improving their own wellbeing.
In a strong show of collaboration across the local charity sector, fourteen organisations have joined the challenge as partners, benefiting from 50% of the funds raised by participants who choose to support them alongside AFCCT. The charities that AFCCT are teaming up with include Aberdeen Sports Village, Abernecessities, All Life Chances, Archie Foundation, Befriend A Child, Camphill Estates, Charlie House, Denis Law Legacy Trust, Friends of Anchor, Lifestars, Russell Anderson Foundation, Sport Aberdeen, UCAN and WeToo!
The initiative is not only bound to the fourteen collaborating charities as participants can also choose to raise funds for any charity of their choice.
AFCCT Community and Events Fundraiser, Debra Christie, said: “We are excited to be leading on this challenge. By teaming up with other charities and local community groups we are offering people in the North-east the chance to participate in an initiative that will benefit many across our local community.”
“We will be working closely with the charities and community groups chosen by participants so that we can help them not only raise vital funds but build awareness about the great work they do. We’d love to see people joining family members, friends and colleagues to get together for a walk, swim, round of golf or just being active in their own way.
“The goal is not just to stay active for 50 days but to make changes well beyond that and help improve the overall health & wellbeing of all those participating.”
