Under-reported methane emissions are 'alarming'

Highly-polluting methane emissions from the energy industry have been under-reported by an "alarming" 70% by governments worldwide, according to the International Energy Agency.

Many of the greenhouse-gas inventories submitted by countries to the UN "have not been updated for years, and, even for those that have, many of these inventories are not yet accurate enough to provide a clear picture of emissions", the IEA added.

The Financial Times states that methane traps more heat over a shorter lifespan than carbon dioxide, with 80 times the warming potential of carbon over a 20-year period. Cutting its emission would have a rapid effect in curbing global warming.

While the agricultural sector is the largest human-related source of methane, next is the energy sector.

Overall in 2021, methane emissions from the energy sector grew by just under 5%, the IEA reported. China, Russia, the US and India were among the top five methane-emitting nations from all sources, and also among the top five emitters of energy-related methane, the IEA found.

New director at NEO Energy

HitecVision-backed New European Offshore (NEO) Energy has appointed an oil and gas heavy hitter to its board of directors.

Tim Dodson was executive vice-president for exploration at Norwegian oil and gas giant Equinor between 2011 and 2020.

He took up the role of vice-president strategy execution in global strategy and business development, but left the state-owned oil company last year.

Energy Voice says Mr Dodson has now been appointed as a director at North Sea player NEO Energy.

Based in Aberdeen, the company is making significant waves in the UK oil and gas sector and last year it completed its acquisition of ExxonMobil's North Sea assets.

Relaunch for north-east hotel

The former Deeside Inn will relaunch as the Balmoral Arms in the coming months following a £2.2million refurbishment.

Balmoral Arms is situated in Ballater and has undergone a transformation over lockdown, says the Press and Journal.

The refurbished hotel will boast a range of suites and deluxe rooms as well as a new dining experience and spa treatment rooms.

As part of the rebranding, owner Crerar Hotels is investing over £1million into team development.

Call for new right to switch off from work

Union leaders are calling for a new right to switch off outside working hours after new research suggested employers enjoyed £27billion of free labour last year because of unpaid overtime.

The TUC said its study indicated that 3.8million people did unpaid overtime in 2021, putting in an average of 7.6 unpaid hours a week - equivalent to £7,100 a year.

The figures show that Government promises to "build back better" are not being fulfilled when it comes to workers being paid for all the hours they work, said the union organisation.
