Meet the exciting people behind our member businesses.

Name: Myles Edwards

Company: Gathimba Edwards Foundation (GEF)

Job title: Co-Founder & Director

Give us the elevator pitch for your business.

GEF is a small children’s charity, with little overheads, making a big difference.  Thanks to our supporters, we are proud to have built a brighter future and improved the quality of life for over 700 children in Kenya and North-east Scotland.

What is the biggest challenge your organisation is facing right now?

Rising costs in both Kenya and north-east Scotland.

Secondary school in Kenya can cost £750 per year.  With a single parent earning around £300 annually, it makes it impossible to afford.  We provide full scholarships from primary to tertiary education, and this year’s budget has risen by £20,000 compared to last year.

In North-east Scotland, families with disabled children often must choose between basic bills and the specialist equipment or therapies their children need. On average, our support of one child has risen to £110 per month.

What is your biggest opportunity?

We’ve launched a Fundraising Advisory Board to support the growing demand for our services in Kenya and north-east Scotland and are excited about the impact the six members generously giving their time can have.

What is your word of advice for fellow Chamber members?

“Be where your feet are” - a quote from David Smith MBE which resonated.  Chamber members lead busy lives, juggling work/personal commitments, which can make it difficult to give full attention to the moment.  Staying present helps us enjoy the journey and boost performance.

What is the best thing about being a Chamber member?

The people we meet at events, and the awareness raised for GEF through Bulletin articles which fellow Chamber member Bold St Media kindly help us with.
