University of Aberdeen Respiratory Medicine Society (UoARMS), set up by medical students in the University of Aberdeen with special interest in Respiratory conditions have teamed up with Aberdeen local asthma charity, Asthma and Allergy Foundation to provide vital support for people living with Respiratory conditions in the North East of Scotland. The students are involved with the work of the charity through volunteering to support children and young people with asthma and are working directly with staff members in Health Promotion to deliver “My Breath is My Life project” which was launched last September.
The students also organised a fundraising concert in aid of Asthma and Allergy Foundation. Through this concert, which was held at Robert Gordons College, the medical students raised £200 for the charity. These fundraising efforts will allow the charity to continue to deliver support to a wider range of people.
Rafsan Chowdhury, medical student representative of the University of Aberdeen Respiratory Medicine Society said: "Organising the charity concert through the University of Aberdeen Respiratory Medicine Society was a great experience as we were able to raise awareness about the importance of asthma and the great work that the Asthma and Allergy Foundation does. Supporting this amazing charity will hopefully benefit the lives of those many people who suffer from asthma and allergies."
Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, chief executive of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation said: “As an organisation, we are committed to improving the lives of people with asthma as a long-term health condition and firmly believe that the way to achieve this is through a well informed and well educated community, where people with asthma know how to self-manage their symptoms and families, carers, employers, colleagues and friends know how to offer support to people living with asthma. We are very pleased that University of Aberdeen medical students have gotten involved with the charity to increase awareness of asthma while raising vital funds to enable the charity continue to provide essential services to people with asthma across the north east of Scotland”.
